This presentation discussed the geometric optimization of the electric machine design. Specific example has been presented in the form of a small Integrated Starter Motor design using the outer runner surface mounted PM motor topology. The optimization tool was developed by me (rlib, https://rlib.redarm.in) and used to automate the geometry generation, configuring simulation physics settings, running FEA, analyzing results, and implementing optimization routine (a hybrid of Simulated annealing and gradient ascent algorithms) to find the global minimum of the cost function. Additional feature of this implementation is that the geometric features are incremented by a quantum of unit (milli meters) that is allowed by the manufacturing processes.
